ITINERARY

DAY 2. Accommodation of your choice .Morning departure to Carrara – Fantiscritti Quarry of the Apuane Alps which tower green and gray on the outside but snowy white when man slices enormous cuts into the body of the mountains. Micheangelo personally selected the blocks of marble desired for his masterpieces from this quarry. Exclusive personal tour conducted by 81 year “young” Walter Danesi of the fascinating “open air” museum he created at the base of the Quarry. Following, an exclusive personal visit of the Nicoli Laborary of Sculpture founded by Carlo Nicoli born in Carrara, 1843 which the Unesco Club of Carrara appointed storical place herald of culture of peace in 2000. Today, his 76 year “young” great-grandson, Carlo humbly states “we are like the symphony orchestra, we can play Mozart but we can't write it. For our super qualified artisans, the best sculpture would be a bird cage with a bird inside carved from a single block of marble." Here technique and art are perfectly separated. Lunch in the non-plus-ultra coastal village of Forte dei Marmi – da Soldi OR weather permitting on-the-beach in an exclusive cabana in Viareggio – da Lelia. Afternoon visit to Pietrasanta’s Medieval Duomo San Martino. Also Fernando Botero’s Gate of Heaven and Gate of Hell Affrescos of 1993 in the Church of Mercy. Worldly renown for their uniqueness and fantasy in particular the gruesomely jolly Gate into Hell, with the Devil looking on as Avarice counts his money, Vanity grins happily in her green dress, and Hitler seems quite upset to find himself where he belongs. DAY 3.Morning departure to the hamlet “jewel” of Camigliano, exclusive guided visit of the 17th century Villa Torrigiani, also known as Small Versailles. Includes the formal gardens and the first floor completely furnished of the Santini Colonna Family’s summer residence. Private tour and lunch at Maria Pia Maionchi’s Wine Estate...Afternoon visit of the Guinness World Records’ Smallest Theater in VETRIANO, Pascaglia – Garfagnano. This 99-seat theater is a Victorian gem established in 1890 as a “proper” theater with stage, orchestra pit and 2 tiers of balconies – ALL in 764 square feet !!! One of the MOST curious features of the theater, there are NO fixed seating since the audience brought their chairs from home. DAY 4.Morning departure to Volterra – town of “mystery and magic” with Etruscan origins of 3000 years ago...Roman ruins...and Medieval presences. Private walking tour with licensed guide also in the Guarnacci Museum. Lunch Afternoon visit to the Certosa of Calci in Pisa with personal guide.
