Charming Hill Hamlets

This tour of charming hilltop hamlets offers unlimited opportunities to enjoy and discover the beauty that mother nature has created over the centuries: sweeping landscapes, with cypress rows alternating with vineyards and olives groves, beechwoods at 200/300 mt above sea level, which usually grow over 1000 meters in the mountains, centenarian holm-oaks of 750+ years are considered monumental plants surrounding green clay hills in Spring and yellow in Summer due to wheat cultivations. Be ready for breathtaking wonderful landscapes above all at sunset with colour variations during each season...with a glass of your favorite wine to toast "dolce far niente" !!!
ITINERARY
Day 1.  Arrival at 4 * hotel accommodation along the world famous Boardwalk of Viareggio.
Suggested welcome dinner at “Ristorante Terrace” overlooking the Magical Mediterranean Viareggio - elegant and refined  is one of the more famous coast resorts in Versilia and a tourist destination known all over the world. It is an amusement-centre, the country of the Carnival and of the night-refinement with its advanced anf first-rate night-clubs and premises. The sea, the big ally of the inhabitants of  Viareggio, constituted the starting-point to build the fishermen's boats. The development and growing of the town have caused that, nowadays, yachts and posh boats are designed and built in the same shipyards.
 
Day 2.  Morning visit  Montecarlo in the Province at Lucca. The ancient centre surrounded by brick walls, still almost entirely intact, stands on a hill (163 metres a.s.l.) has a population of 4300 inhabitants. In 1437, during the war between Lucca and Florence, Montecarlo was occupied by the Florentines.  The fortress, historical symbol of Montecarlo, stands on the highest point of the Cerruglio hill and its oldest part, called “Mastio”, is almost cylindrical in shape and is situated at the northwest edge. Of the fourteenth century three entrances to Montecarlo, situated along the fortified perimeter, all that remain are Porta Fiorentina (in the east side of the wall), Porticciola or Porta a Lucca (in the west) and Porta Nuova (in the south).
In Via Carmignani there is the Accademia dei Rassicurati Theatre, built in 1795 by the Accademia dei Rassicurati (an association of aristocrats and well-off countrymen) .

Afternoon visit  Massa Cozzile in the Province of Pistoia.  Museum of Saint Michael is a “MUST” !!! 
 
Day 3.  Day at leisure for enjoyable shopping offerings along Viareggio’s Boardwalk.  Suggested lunch in one of the cabana’s on the coast.  Dinner at your pleasure
 
Day 4.  Morning visit Colonnata – Province of Massa Carrara Of Roman origins, referred to as “Colonia” where the men lived who worked in the marble quarries. The splendid “lunense” shining marble.
 
Lunch at local Trattoria.
 
Afternoon visit to Montemarcello – Province of La Spezia  It’s a very ancient hamlet, and walking the “Caprione” area is like passing through centuries of history. You can go for a walk along the Roman road that is still paved with stones somewhere as far as Bocca di Magra where there is a beautiful thermal Roman villa of the 4th century B.C.  Possible visit Luni and its archaeological excavations and Roman amphitheatre. The defensive works of the village and the picturesque church dedicated to St. Peter are traced back to the 15th century.
 

Day 5.  Morning transfer to Pienza, in the Crete Senesi. Day at leisure to explore all the delights and surprises this Renaissance City treasures within the historical center. In ancient times it was an obscure village called Corsignano and belonged to the Piccolomini family, one of whose scions was Enea Silvio Piccolomini, who became Pope Pius II in 1458. The year after Piccolomini's election, he charged the architect Bernardo Rossellino with the task of rebuilding the entire village, turning it in the process into a classic Renaissance City.

Day 6.  Morning visit to Murlo. The little hamlet of Murlo is a discovery not to be missed: a perfectly preserved etruscan settlement with just two gateway entrances in the walls.
There are sangiovese vineyards dating back to the estruscan  all around Murlo producing traditional wines. The wonderful museum of Etruscan artifacts is another "MUST" !!

Afternoon visit to Monticchiello whose 200 inhabitants seem to welcome each guest personally !!! Dinner at your pleasure
