Day 1 Mantua

Arrival in afternoon in Mantua.  Check in to the hotel, then you are free to spend your time as you wish. Take an afternoon walking tour of the central Mantua's cobbled streets and visit Rotunda di San Lorenzo, the oldest church in the city, built in the late 11th century, and the Basilica of Sant'Andrea, considered one of northern Italy's major works of 15th century Renaissance architecture. Dinner and overnight stay in Mantua.

Day 2 Mantua

This morning will be spent exploring Mantua's Palazzo Ducale which was built between the 14th and 17th centuries by the Gonzaga as the royal residency of their Duchy. A labyrinth over 500 rooms there is plenty to see, we will admire here a wonderful art collection including the famous frescoes in the ‘Camera degli Sposi’ by Mantegna. This afternoon, visit the Early Renaissance church of San Sebastiano, Renaissance artist Andrea Mantegna's house, which he designed himself, before spending time examining the mannerist architecture of the Palazzo Te. The masterpiece of Giulio Romano, the palazzo was built between 1524 and 1534 for Frederico II Gonzaga, the frescos painted by local painters are still the most striking feature. Maybe you want to visit also the Palazzo San Sebastiano of the Gonzaga. Dinner and overnight stay in Mantua.

Day 3 Ferrara

Full day dedicated to Ferrara. With many medieval houses, a 12th century cathedral, the palaces of the d’Este dynasty and one of the region’s greatest walled towns, Ferrara is one of Italy’s hidden gems. We will visit the cathedral and the cathedral museum, which displays objects from the cathedral such as 13th century wall panels, a collection of illuminated hymnbooks and paintings. We continue with a guided tour of the magnificent Palazzo Schifanoia with its wonderful Cycle of the Months fresco by Francesco Della Cossa and Ercole de’ Roberti. In the afternoon guided tour at the 14th century Castello Estense taking in such sights as the 15th century frescoes, the dungeons and the wonderful views from the Torre dei Leoni. Dinner and overnight stay in Mantua.

Day 4 Modena

In the morning we will head to Modena, well-known worldwide for such icons as Enzo Ferrari and Luciano Pavarotti, and gastronomical products such as tortellini, Lambrusco wine, and balsamic vinegar. You will have time to explore the historical town centre with its arcades, churches and palaces, including the magnificent Romanesque Cathedral, Torre Civica, Piazza Grande, the Ducal Palace, the Palace of Museums, and the Este Gallery. Perhaps you wander the excellent market to pick up some regional products, such as balsamic vinegar, parmiggiano reggiano cheese or prosciutto di Parma. Return for dnner and overnight stay in Mantua.

Day 5 Mantua

Breakfast and departure for return journey. End of our services.
